Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park is one of the largest and most iconic wildlife parks in Kenya — and Africa as a whole. It’s split into two main sections:

Tsavo East National Park
Size: ~13,747 km²
Known for: Open savannah, red elephants (due to the red soil), the Yatta Plateau (one of the world’s longest lava flows), Galana River, and Lugard Falls.
Wildlife: Elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and many species of birds.

Tsavo West National Park
Size: ~9,065 km²
Known for: More rugged terrain, Mzima Springs (crystal-clear water where you can view hippos and fish through an underwater glass tank), Shetani Lava Flow, Chyulu Hills.
Wildlife: Rhinos (at the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary), elephants, big cats, and a variety of birds and smaller mammals.

Key Highlights:
Famous History: Known for the “Man-Eaters of Tsavo” — two lions that killed dozens of railway workers in 1898 during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda railway. The story was later adapted into the film The Ghost and the Darkness.
Accessibility: Tsavo is halfway between Nairobi and Mombasa, making it a popular safari stop.
Less Crowded: Compared to Maasai Mara or Amboseli, Tsavo tends to be quieter, offering a more remote and wild safari experience.
